One of the most interesting products on the floor of this week’s ATA
Show in Columbus, Ohio, was the new Phantom compound bow from Carbon
Tech. The Phantom features revolutionary new carbon riser and limb
technology that adds up to an overall package that weighs a mere 3.1
pounds. As soon as you place your hand on the Phantom and pick it up,
you know right away you are dealing with a potentially game-changing
design here, and after examining the rest of the Phantom’s specs, it
seems clear that Carbon Tech potentially has a big winner on its hands.
The Phantom measures 34 inches between the axles, has an 8-inch
brace height and an IBO speed rating of 315 fps. It’s available with
your choice of dual or hybrid cam systems for a retail price of $999.
It will be available later this year, and Carbon Tech officials said
more information about the bow should be up on their website HERE in a week or so.
Carbon Tech President Rick McKinney said the key to the Phantom’s
combination of strength and lightweight package lies in a custom
manufacturing process by Win & Win, a company that has pioneered
the use of carbon in recurve risers in recent years. The Phantom
features a carbon grid support frame inside the riser which supports
the stylish outer shell. Although carbon compound bows have been tried
before and had problems with durability, McKinney is confident Carbon
Tech has eliminated those problems from the past thanks to Win &
Win’s expertise. And since the performance of carbon – which absorbs
and dissipates shock and noise more effectively than aluminum – has
been proven in the world of target archery, McKinney asks, “Why
shouldn’t a bowhunter get as much quality as an Olympian?”
As for the Phantom’s performance, McKinney promises archers will be
impressed. “It’s just dead,” he said. “It’s a great feeling. There’s no
question it’s the future.”
